Research and Planning: Film Poster Drafts and Research

I have decided that I want my poster to be like the "The Box" film poster. I'm going to do the black background with the red and white text. Also I want the black and white close-up picture of the main character who is Laura and only put in her name at the top of the poster in white so it looks similar to the "The Box" poster. Instead of having the villain character in front with the massive red line going up I would like small pictures of me and Becky in close-up shots of black and red colour at the bottom of the poster to resemble both the "Scream" and "Scream 4" posters.

Research and Planning: Production Meeting 3

Me and Becky had a meeting to make changes on the storyline of the film the teaser trailer will advertise.

Changed Plot: Popular girl of school/college dates a quiet, unpopular geek for a while as a joke. Her aim was to make him seem like a fool by embarrassing him in front of other students. After the boy wants to take revenge. Later as he gets hurt a lot he turns into a psycho and decides he wants to take revenge on her. One night everything gets scary when she and her friends are at her house for a sleep over. One by one he kills her friends in between frightening moments and that is how his revenge is taken on her. Last of all when he has brought terror to her he plans to kill her too.

Research and Planning: Film Magazine Drafts and Research

I have chose to make my film magazine cover to be similar to "The Golden Compass" issue of Empire magazine. I want the big, simple font masthead and two runner text for the bottom and top of the magazine. I want the 3 female characters on the cover with Laura in the middle as she is the main character like the little girl is in "The Golden Compass" film. I will place the film title same position as that Empire issue with the line of extra text right at the bottom of the film title, the red and white circle shape with the white and black text at the bottom right of the cover and the bar code with the date and price at the bottom left of the cover. I have chosen red and white font colour to resemble the golden yellow and white of "The Golden Compass" cover and I have put in forward slashes between each film titles at the bottom of the magazine cover in two complete different colours from the text colours. Plus to make my magazine cover show the horror theme of the film I have put in a plain black background and instead of a prop picture being placed above the characters I want a picture of blood writing on a wall to be put in or something similar and spookier looking.

Research and Planning: Magazine Analysis

  • The masthead is in red, that's a dominant colour of horror that relates to danger and blood.

  • The mid close-up shot of the female character in the picture focuses on her fear as well as bravery as it seems she's trying to hide the fear.
  • As the girl in the picture is covered in blood it straight away tells the audience it's a horror film magazine. The picture is the most eye-catching horror related part to the magazine.
  • Blue and red font is used all over the cover, smallest text of different articles on the left side and main story on the right in big and small font size. The extra feature is mentioned in a red box on the right middle to stand out from the rest of the text and with the use of black and white font colour. The second main text is in the bottom left corner so all of the text fits in well together on the space of the cover. Last of all the bar code is at the bottom right corner.
  • Blue and red font point out to the picture which is mainly green and yellow so then the picture can be the biggest attraction, easier to get the attention of horror film fans.

  • As the featured content is based on a horror film the masthead is red instead of the usual white colour. The red colour connotates blood, gruesome attacks which relate to the featured film "Jennifer's Body".

  • The long shot of Megan Fox with the hand covered in blood and the blood on the ground attracts the audience who are interested in horror movies. I would say mainly males as it has the eye-catching good looking Megan Fox, this maybe shown to tell the female audeince that it's not a chick flick.

  • The big picture of the actress Megan Fox, small pictures of different films and the movie linked subheadings show the readers it's a film magazine.
  • Red, blue and grey font text is set out similar to the "Gorezone" magazine text. Main story on the left side instead of the right. Grey arrow (unique shape) is behind the main subheading to make it more eye-catching. Plus it points out to Megan Fox and so does the small red font on the left of her as the rest of the text above and below it is in black and grey colour. Extra feature is shown with the big red "PLUS" text for clearer focus towards it. Grey writing again is on the left bottom corner for that well used cover space and the bar code at the bottom right.

  • Dark blue and red are primary colors that go well together, these colors are most likely to make the magazine attractive as they brighten up the white background colour of the cover.

Research and Planning: Plan for next week

Next week we need to get our final storyboard ready. Issue has been raised of having one of our horror setting in the woods as it's too common so me and Becky have decided to make changes to the storyline and will work on it as soon as possible.

Research and Planning: Micro Elements

For our teaser trailer I am planning which type of shots and camera movements I would want to use:
  • Long shot
  • Jump cut
  • Pan
  • Close up shot
  • Medium close up shot
  • POV
  • Birds eye view
  • High angle shot
  • Medium shot
  • Two shot
As a group we are handling the sound elementary together and as an individual I think the sounds should be:
  • slow at start
  • faster as it plays
  • beated sound would be interesting
  • loud quick wound before end few seconds of silence

Research and Planning: Codes and Conventions of a Film Poster

Looking at few horror film posters I have noticed the common conventions of horror so for my own I will have:
  • use dark colours which is more likely to be black than any other colours
  • a film title being a striking light colour in thin font
  • extra text being in white or grey e.g. catchy phrase to the film
  • the crew credits in white small font at the bottom
  • one big picture with an old film reel or fine paint effect.

Research and Planning: Film Poster Analysis

The use of the dark effect with the colour black and the old film strip effect indicates the horror genre.

The picture is the main attraction telling the audience the plot is about this creepy masked character being the "bad guy", this also shows the horror genre.

The film title is in big font at the bottom on top of the crew credits to fit in well with the rest of the poster as the main text is the second biggest highlight and therefore is underneath the big picture.

Straightaway from half the title "Chainsaw Massacre" and the picture you could realize its for 18 year old and over as it indicates it could possibly be pretty gruesome and really frightening.

Research and Planning: Teaser Trailer Second Draft Idea (with cinematography)

Plot Idea: Bunch of friends hang around in the woods, their usual place. John wants revenge off his ex-girlfriend Emma. Scaring her and attacking her friends is his plan with the help of his good old friend they've never met before. Things seem to get spooky in the woods. Research and Planning: Storyboard

This is the first draft to our storyboard of the teaser trailer.

Research and Planning: Costumes and Props list

Me and Laura have decided what props we are going to need, where we will get them for and how much they'll be for our teaser trailer production.
